Provider Performance

Publicly Reported Performance

Much information about hospitals and health care professionals is available to consumers on the internet and by public access.  The news media sometimes has stories about hospital and physician “scorecards”.  In general, Paramount does not use these secondary sources of information since some believe they may not be accurate or fair.  Some of these sites list only providers who pay a fee to be listed, while others do not apply evidence-based criteria.

Hospitals
Most Paramount hospitals submit information to the Hospital Quality Alliance for Hospital Compare. This is a nationwide reporting system operated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). It allows consumers and other health care providers to view and compare clinical performance information about hospitals around the United States. Select from the list at right to learn about the current indicators of high quality care included in Hospital Compare.  Click on Performance of Paramount Hospitals for a summary of the relative performance of Paramount hospitals.

The Leapfrog Group™ is a consortium of employers who monitor performance of hospitals on behalf of their employees.

Because Leapfrog focuses on care at large, urban hospitals, only a few Paramount hospitals are candidates for reporting. Link to The Leapfrog Group™from the list at right. All Michigan hospitals are asked to respond to the annual Michigan Health and Safety Coalition (MH&SC) survey of which a portion is the Leapfrog survey.

Nursing Homes, Home Health and Dialysis Centers
Nursing Home Compare, Home Health Compare and Dialysis Facility Compare provide information for consumer research about the performance of Medicare-approved providers throughout the United States. These CMS websites may be reached by selecting them from the column at right, or by using the address www.medicare.gov. Information can be printed, and is also available by calling CMS at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). Y vea en Espanol.

Physicians and Other Practitioners
State Medical Boards are the first place Paramount looks to be sure that doctors, dentists, and other medical professionals are appropriately licensed to practice medicine. This is where a sanction or reprimand will be listed if a practitioner has received one. In Ohio, the information is available from the link at right, or by calling their office in Columbus at (614) 466-3934. Michigan's board on licensing of medical professionals can be reached at (517) 373-3740 in Lansing, or by linking from the list at right.

Beginning with 2003, Paramount has identified primary care physicians with the best results on selected preventive and chronic health care measures.  Examples of these indicators are immunization and cancer screening rates, and use of appropriate medications to treat asthma.  Lists of the recognized physicians in each primary care specialty with the best results are made available in For Your Health and by clicking on Paramount Recognized Physicians in the column at right.

The American Diabetes Association, in conjunction with the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), has a special recognition program for diabetes specialists, including some Paramount physicians. For detailed information, go to www.ncqa.org/dprp. The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association, along with NCQA, have also developed a special stroke and heart care recognition program, which can be found at www.ncqa.org/hsrp.

Accreditation Organizations
Other sources of information about how well health care providers are doing include accreditation organizations. These are independent agencies that look into the care and services provided by hospitals, nursing homes, groups of physicians, and places like labs and rehab centers. Most accreditation agencies use a rating system such as a score, a number of stars, or a set of labels.

The two most often cited agencies are the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the American Accreditation HealthCare Commission (URAC).
Many other agencies monitor care and service for specific types of providers, such as rehabilitation (CARF) and x-ray centers (ACR). Choose from the list at right to get more information and to find the current ratings for Paramount providers.
